5 Steps to Deeper Relationship with the Holy Spirit

Jesus is the Lamb of God (John 1:29) and the Baptizer with the Holy Spirit (John 1:25-34). One of the assignments of Jesus is to introduce us to the Holy Spirit. Jesus gives eternal life and abundant life (John 10:10). Eternal life does not exist outside of salvation but abundant life does not exist outside of the Spirit.

We are “sealed” by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13). This speaks of a relationship. We are encouraged “not to grieve” the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30) which speaks of intimacy. Intimacy flows from relationship. Our salvation gives us the relationship but our pursuit of the Holy Spirit brings about intimacy.

  1. You can’t have fellowship with Someone you keep referring as “It.”

“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.” 2 Corinthians 13:14

The grace of Jesus changed our lives. The love of God is the foundation for everything, and the communion of the Holy Spirit is what will change everything! Many know about grace and love but very few practice communion with the Spirit.

He waits to be wanted, longs to be welcomed. He needs to be hosted. Many people invite the Holy Spirit, but few know how to host Him. To start fellowshipping with the Holy Spirit we must first see Him as a person. If you want to walk in the Holy Spirit, start with talking to the Holy Spirit. Throughout the day address Him, welcome Him, thank Him and worship Him. You should not feel guilty for not spending time with the Holy Spirit but you should feel thirsty. He wants relationship, not rules.

When you fellowship with the Holy Spirit, start with the awareness that He is with you, then turn attention to Him and then lift your hearts with affection towards Him.

2. Your relationship can’t go higher than your obedience to the Holy Spirit.

Bible instructs us not to grieve the Holy Spirit. (Ephesians 4:30) One of the main ways the Holy Spirit is grieved is when we are disobedient to His word and His leading. Many people after starting the fellowship with the Holy Spirit will begin to have a fellowship with the Holy Spirit, it’s when the Holy Spirit will talk to you. It might start with something like it did with Jesus where the Holy Spirit led Jesus to fast in the wilderness. It may be that you need to repent or apologize. Perhaps you need to start giving or living for others.

If you take the risk of obedience you will experience the reward in that relationship. No risk = no reward = no relationship.

This does not mean though we have to listen to everything that comes to our head. The Holy Spirit uses our spirit to communicate to us, but His voice will never contradict His word. The world says to follow your gut; the Bible says to follow your God.

When I was younger my main prayer was to hear God’s voice but now my prayer is for God to give me the grace to heed His voice. God does not always speak what we love to hear. It’s not always awesome prophetic words for other people or words of knowledge that bring immediate results. Those are nice but at times God’s voice will lead you like Abraham to give up something you are attached you. In that God is testing you if you want to go deeper with Him or stay on the same level.

By obeying the promptings of the Holy Spirit we allow Him to develop within us His fruit. His fruit is His attitudes toward us. They can’t be developed if we are disobedient to Him or if we grieve Him.

3. Come back to Him when you make a mistake.

When we start living in the Holy Spirit we will make mistakes, fall into our old patterns. Sometimes go for days without prayer or reading of God’s word. The key is to always bounce back. Even if we commit sin to repent and get back up in walking with God.

God came to the meeting where He would meet with Adam, knowing Adam fell into sin. God did not cancel the meeting. He was expecting Adam so that they can talk and Adam and can repent and move forward but Adam hid from God. When you sin, run to God. If you can’t run, walk. If you can’t walk, crawl but don’t ever stay there in guilt and shame. If you can’t crawl, call someone to take you to Jesus like the friends of the paralyzed man. Men don’t drown by falling into water but by staying there.

The devil will lie to you saying that you are so inconstant, you start but can’t finish that the Holy Spirit can’t use someone like you. The Holy Spirit knew your tendencies, weaknesses, struggles before He committed Himself to your sanctification. He is not shocked or surprised when you make a mess. What shocks Him is when you think He can’t help you to get out of it. When you don’t trust Him enough to pull you out of whatever struggle you find yourself in.

4. Feed yourself with messages about the Holy Spirit.

Physical hunger comes from not eating, but spiritual hunger comes from not reading. You are what you eat. You are what you feed yourself with. Your spiritual diet can transform your spiritual destiny. One of the habits you can make that will bring awareness of the Holy Spirit in your life is regularly reading about the person and the work of the Holy Spirit. Some of my favorite books that have fueled my love and passion for the Holy Spirit are:

Good Morning, Holy Spirit – Benny Hinn
The God I Never Knew – Robert Morris
The Forgotten God – Francis Chan
Encounter with the Holy Spirit – Guillermo Maldonado
Holy Spirit Introduction – John Bevere

There is much more but this is just a few things that will wet your appetite and give you broader knowledge of this amazing person. One of the things that you can do as well if you don’t like reading is to watch/listen to messages on the Holy Spirit, here are a few links of my messages that could be of blessing to you:

5. Invest your life into the salvation of souls.

The purpose of the power of the Holy Spirit is for making us into witnesses (Acts 1:8). Jesus said that the Holy Spirit will come upon us and we will receive power, tongues were not mentioned in Acts 1:8. It seems to me that most people have limited the Holy Spirit baptism to speaking in tongues instead of walking in power. We need both. The purpose of the power is SOULS. I truly believe that we quench the power of the Holy Spirit when we live inward focused lives that don’t reach out to the lost souls.

In Ezekiel 47, water came out of the temple and went to the dead sea, lowest point on earth. The closer it got to the dead sea the deeper and wider it got. Holy Spirit once revealed to me during my fast that as long as I value Him and heading in the direction of the lost with all my being, His grace will gradually increase in my life. This word is also for you. Make sure your ministry is headed toward the lost. Make it your number 1 goal to see people come to know Jesus. I fast for that. I pray for that daily. I structure our ministry for the lost to be brought to the Kingdom. I monthly support ministries that win the souls.

Souls matter to the Holy Spirit, and they have to matter to me. That’s how His power flows. His power is not for making us famous or rich or known but for Jesus’ name to influence our generation and that as many as possible to come to the Kingdom.
